Lac La Hache ( Lake of the Axe)

Lac la Hache bills itself as 'the longest town in the Cariboo; as it stretches along the eastern side of the lake on Hwy. 97. During the summer Lac la Hache is popular for fishing, boating, water skiing, para-gliding and jet_skiing. The shores are filled with public access points, as well as services, including boat rentals, beaches and picnic areas.0

Medieval war

There's a war in Clinton on the first weekend of August. Over 1,000 people, some members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)and other Live Action Role Play (LARP) groups, hold a war and camp in a scenic pasture for upwards of one week as they joust, feast and battle. The temporary village includes eateries, merchants selling period items and services, and families living as people did in medieval times. Local SCA and LARP enthusiasts also organize events each year in 100 Mile that the public can attend.

Cariboo Lakes Circle Tour

For a circle tour that includes great scenery and places to stop for fishing, bird watching or wildlife viewing, there's the Green Lake/Watch Lake drive. To start the tour, head south down Hwy. 97 to 70 Mile House, turning east at Bonaparte Road and driving 25 kilometres to the entrance to Crater Lake. On the way back from Crater Lake, follow the north shore of Green Lake, past Watch Lake and on to Hwy. 24 to Lone Butte. Continuing west on Hwy 24 takes you back to Hwy 97.

Heritage School Tour

There are a few old log schools built at the turn of the last century that are still standing and worth investigating. The old Horse Lake School, also known as Willowford School, was fixed up in spring 2000. It first opened in 1939. Other schools to view include Bridge Lake School and the 134 School house at the 108 Heritage Site.

Fishing in the Cariboo

For some of the best fly fishing in the Cariboo, head east. Canim Lake is also known for its kokanee, rainbow trout and lake trout. But Canim Lake is more than a fishing destination. During the summer, people can enjoy great beaches, canoeing, boating and jet skiing. On land, there's horse-back riding and hiking. In winter enjoy dog sledding, snowmobiling, back-country ski touring, skating, snow-shoeing and sleigh rides. To get to the Canim Lake area, drive three kilometres north of 100 Mile House and head east on the Canim Hendrix Lake Road which has signs to point the way

Mountain Biking

South Cariboo trails are a mountain biker's haven in the summer and fall. Popular routes include ski trails in the 108 Mile area and The Hills Health Ranch, and at the 99 Mile ski area. There is great road and off-road riding in the scenic Green Lake/70 Mile area. Each June the 100 Mile Nordics Cross-country Ski Club hosts a triathlon at 108 Mile that includes a challenging cycling component.

South Cariboo Garlic Festival

August is the South Cariboo's Garlic Festival.
Of course food and garlic will be at the fore front, all weekend long. Such gourmet garlic goodies as garlic braids, garlic ice cream, garlic jam, garlic chocolate chip cookies, garlic dips, fresh garlic and pickled garlic will be available. The two day event will not be short of entertainment either, planned are gold panning, garlic eating and pealing contests, a petting
zoo, a kid's craft corner, and a whole lot more including a whole array of vending booths featuring such things as birch syrup, lavender, pottery and ceramics, to name only a few.For more information, please contact the South Cariboo Visitor Info Centre, 1-877- 511-5353, or festival organizer Gail Szolosi at 1-877-397-2518.

Painted Chasm

For a look at cliffs of bright: orange and pink rock, visit Chasm Provincial Park, also known as the Painted Chasm. It's located 15 kilo-metres north of Clinton and four km east of the marked turn off from Hwy. 97. The colorful cliffs are the result of volcanic lava carved out by glacial melt water.

Volcanic Mahood Lake

It’s a 88 kilo-metre trip over pavement and good gravel roads from 100  Mile  House to Mahood Lake, but the journey is worth it. The scenery around Mahood Lake is some of the prettiest in the area, which led to an extension of Wells Gray Park to include the lake within park boundaries. To get to Mahood Lake from 100 Mile, travel along the Canim-Hendrix Lake Road and then on to the South Canim Lake Road. There are also basalt outcrops at either end of Mahood Lake, remnants of the volcanic history of the area.

100 Mile House Wildlife Sanctuary

The 100 Mile Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the west side of Hwy. 97 at Airport Road, is a great place to view wildlife. Aided by Ducks Unlimited, this conservation project grows in popularity with each passing year. The area attracts a myriad variety of birds. A walking trail encircles the eight-acre marsh. Signs help people identify the numerous bird species that frequent the wetland. The terrain is flat around most of the marsh with minor hills on one side, so the walk can be done by most people. Benches, many purchased by area residents in memory of loved ones, are positioned at various locations for those who want to rest or relax.

Cariboo Gold Rush

It was the Cariboo Gold Rush of the 1860s that opened up this vast country, and names like 100 Mile House and 70 Mile House refer to stopping points along the historic Cariboo Road. A few remnants of the old Cariboo Wagon Road, as it was called, can still be seen. Sections in or near town can be found at the demonstration forest at 99 Mile, running through the Marmot Ridge Golf Course, or as Trail No. 10 at The Hills Health Ranch at 108 Mile. Other sections can be seen to the left of the highway north of Lac la Hache around the old homesteads.

108 Heritage Site

For a look into the Cariboo's past, visit the 108 Mile Heritage Site. The lakeside park, operated by the 100 Mile and District Historical Society, has various historic buildings, including a trapper's cabin and the 134 Mile School House. The school dates back to the 19 3 Os. The site features refurbished log buildings, and period implements and tools. One highlight is the massive 1905 Watson barn, the largest log barn of its kind left in Canada and built to
house over 200 Clydesdales. Local residents mark the nations birthday, Canada Day (July 1) at the heritage site. History also comes alive at the 83 Mile Farm Equipment Museum located along Hwy 97. Watch for the signs on the west side of the highway

White Gull

There are only two places in the Interior where the distinct white seagulls lay their eggs and raise their young. One is Fraser Lake. The other is the appropriately named Gull Island on the south side of Bridge Lake. The small island is rocky and treeless. All those gulls are a wonder to see, but boaters are asked to stay a fair distance from Gull Island so the birds and their young are not disturbed, Bring along a pair of binoculars or a zoom lens.

Farmers Market

For fresh produce and wholesome baking check out the South Cariboo armer's Market on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Watch for signs to guide you to the site. Organizers are in the midst of securing a site along Hwy 97. The market features organic vegetables as well as herbs, flowers, fresh breads and baking, as well as locally made crafts. It runs from early May until the Thanksgiving weekend in October
